Qualified for Boston at the '07 SGM with a whopping 8 seconds to spare!  

Short-Term Running Goals:

Take it easy this summer and fall while I try to build my mileage without injury (for a change).  Pick up the intensity as I start marathon training.   Run Boston with my wife A'Lissa in '09.  Run a sub 20 minute 5k in '09.

Personal:

47 years old, married to A'Lissa (who is faster than me) for 20 years, 3 fantastic kids.  Our twins, including Thatcher who has a blog here, start BYU in '08.  I'm a USATF level one coach and am a volunteer assistant with the Skyline XC team.  A'Lissa and I are race directors for the Fill the Ark 5k in East Millcreek.

I did 40 minutes on the treadmill today.  I can't run yet, but I think I will be able to sometime this week.  I'll be going to Footlocker West with the Skyline team on Thursday, hopefully I'll be able to run in California.

I returned last night from Footlocker West.  I had planned on jogging the course with the team on Friday, but I decided not to do so.  I can still feel the calf, and I am determined to not get injured again, so I decided it was best to hold off.  I'll start on Monday, and take it nice and slow, very gradually adding speed and distance.

BTW, Shalaya qualified for Nationals by finishing 7th!  And Danielle also is a finalist, finishing 3rd!

Back in the saddle today!  I did 1 mile on the treadmill at a 10:00 pace.  I felt it in the calf, but it didn't really hurt.  I followed that up with 25 minutes on the stair machine.

I did 1.5 miles on the treadmill this morning, 10:00 pace, and there was not pain whatsoever.  I couldn't feel it at all.  After that, I did another 20 minutes on the stair machine, but near the end I could feel the calf ever so slightly.  My plan is to gradually up the mileage over the next few weeks until I am running pain free about 5 miles per day, and then start mixing in some faster stuff.

2 miles on the treadmill followed by 10 minutes on the stair machine.  By the end of the 2 miles I was starting to feel the calf a bit.  I'll keep it to 2 miles or less for the time being.

1 mile on the treadmill, followed by 20 minutes on the stair machine.  The calf was acting up a bit today, so I cut the run short.  More troubling, I'm starting to feel the hip a bit.  I had stopped the hip exercises after doing them for the prescribed amount of time, but I think I'd better start them up again and keep doing them.  It may seem odd for me to do the stair machine if my calf hurts, but it doesn't aggravate the calf at all if I keep my heel down.

I didn't run this morning because I slept in a bit after a bad night's sleep.  Instead, I did 2 miles on the treadmill at night.  10:00 pace.

2 miles on the treadmill, 10:00 pace.  I'm flying to Denver tomorrow just for the day.  I'll be leaving the house at 5:15 a.m., so I may try to get tomorrow's run in tonight.

I got a few days unplanned rest.  I had to go to Denver for the day on Friday.  I left the house at 5:15, so no run in the morning.  Then, because of the weather in Salt Lake all the flights home were cancelled on Friday, so I had to spend the night.  I didn't have any running gear with me, and when I got home late Saturday afternoon I had a date scheduled with BYU basketball and football.  Anyway, back at it today.  2 miles, 9:30 pace.

2 miles, 9:13 pace.  I haven't had any pain at all for the past several days.  I'll continue with about 2 miles per day, and maybe bump it up a bit starting next week.

I made it outside today for a very nice Christmas morning run.  It was a bit windy, but otherwise very nice for a run.  I picked up the pace a bit and no problem with the injuries.  I'll start increasing the distance and pace next week.  Oh, I also noticed that I am really out of shape!  2.58 miles, 8:43 pace.

I felt fine after my slightly longer, slightly faster run yesterday.  That is, I felt fine right up until I stepped on the treadmill this evening.  That was the first moment I felt a twinge of pain in my calf.  It got worse as I ran, so I played it safe and quite after 1.65 miles.  10:00 pace.
